Decks and Outdoor Living

Custom decks, pergolas, and outdoor living structures across Greater Boston — built to last in New England weather.

Outdoor Living Built to Survive New England Weather

A deck is the most-used outdoor space on most homes — and the one that takes the biggest beating from New England winters. Done right, a deck is a structural extension of your home that lasts decades. Done wrong, it warps, rots, and pulls away from the house within years.

At North Heritage Construction, we build decks the way we build everything else — properly engineered, properly fastened, and built with materials chosen to hold up. Whether you're replacing an existing deck that's reached the end of its life or building a new one as part of a larger project, we deliver outdoor living spaces that earn the investment.

We build decks across Newton, Arlington, Somerville, Lexington, Belmont, and surrounding Greater Boston communities.

Service Scope

What We Build

Custom decks and outdoor living structures designed for the way you actually use your yard.

Composite Decks

Composite decking from Trex, TimberTech, and other premium manufacturers — engineered to resist warping, splintering, and rot. Higher upfront cost but virtually maintenance-free for decades. The right choice for homeowners who want to enjoy their deck instead of refinishing it every two years.

Wood Decks

Pressure-treated and cedar decks built with traditional craftsmanship. Lower upfront cost than composite, with a natural look that ages into character over time. Properly built and properly maintained, a wood deck holds its own for 15-20 years.

Multi-Level and Custom Designs

Multi-level decks, wraparound designs, integrated benches and planters, custom railings, and built-in lighting. We work from your vision to design outdoor living spaces that match how your family actually uses the yard — not generic deck shapes.

Deck Replacement and Repair

Existing deck reached the end of its life? We handle full demolition and rebuild on existing footings (where structurally sound) or new footings as needed. We also handle structural repairs to existing decks — joists, ledger boards, posts — when the deck surface is fine but the structure needs work.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a deck cost in Massachusetts?

A pressure-treated wood deck typically runs $30–$50 per square foot installed. A composite deck runs $50–$90 per square foot. A 400 square foot composite deck with railings, stairs, and standard features generally falls in the $25,000–$40,000 range. Custom features, multi-level designs, and premium materials increase cost.

How long does it take to build a deck?

Most residential decks take 2–4 weeks from start to finish once permits are approved. Demolition of an existing deck adds 2–3 days. Concrete footings need to cure before framing begins. Multi-level or larger custom decks may take 4–6 weeks.

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Newton or Arlington?

Yes — almost all residential decks require a building permit in Massachusetts. This includes new builds, deck replacements, and significant structural repairs. North Heritage handles all permit applications and required inspections as part of the project.

Composite or wood — which is better?

Composite costs more upfront but requires virtually no maintenance and lasts 25-30+ years. Wood costs less upfront but needs cleaning, sealing, and occasional board replacement. For most homeowners who plan to stay in the home long-term, composite is the better long-term value.

Can you replace just the deck surface and keep the existing structure?

Sometimes — if the structural framing (joists, beams, posts) is in good condition. We assess every existing deck before quoting a replacement. If the structure is sound, we can replace just the surface for significant cost savings. If the structure has deteriorated, full replacement is the right call.

How long do composite decks actually last?

Premium composite decking from Trex, TimberTech, and similar manufacturers typically carries 25-50 year warranties against fading, staining, and structural failure. In practice, a properly installed composite deck looks and performs like new for 25+ years with minimal maintenance.

Can you add a roof, pergola, or screened enclosure to my deck?

Yes — we build covered decks, pergolas, and screened porches as part of new deck construction or as additions to existing decks. These features extend usable outdoor living time, especially in shoulder seasons. Pricing depends on size, materials, and structural complexity.

When is the best time of year to build a deck in Massachusetts?

Spring through fall is the typical building season. Most homeowners want their deck ready for summer, which means starting design and permitting in late winter. We can also build in mild winter weather depending on conditions, but concrete footings need temperatures above freezing during the cure.
